Vintage Dehner Custom Flight Boots Jim McDivitt NASA Apollo 9 Crew Gemini, PilotThis is a pair of vintage Dehner custom made pilot boots. I bought these in a thrift store here in Tucson Arizona. I called Dehner to see if they could tell me what size the boots were and when they were made by the order number which was written in the boots. The helpful people at Dehner emailed me after looking through their records to find the original order. The boots were made for J.A.McDivitt in 1972. They are the "Alert Boot" in black scotch grain leather and they are Size 9D. Jim McDivitt lives here in Tucson and I believe the boots were donated to the thrift store. This type of boot is not a common thing and they were expensive boots when they were new. The cost of these boots today is 5.00 so they are not something that everyone would have. Dehner was also making boots for NASA and some military pilots at this time. Obviously they are not space boots, but would have been worn when flying aircraft such as the NASA T-38's or other times. The boots look like they have only been worn a few times and Jim McDivitt retired from NASA in 1972 so that makes sense. This is a really great pair of high end flight boots that are a wonderful piece of history. Payment must be received within 7 days of auction close or high bidder loses all right to property.
This is the description of the Alert Boot from the Dehner website:
This style was designed by Dehner's D.D. Ketzler for Air Force General Curtis LeMay. The General, then Commander of the Strategic Air Command in Omaha, wanted a boot the Alert crews could get on easily and quickly. The crews would sleep in the jump suits, the general told him, but not their boots. This style was also the basis for the first space boots ordered by NASA in 1962. With slight alterations, these boots were used on the first three manned space flights.
The Dehner website also has pages recounting their boots use in the early NASA space flight programs
