    Description

    RARE OLD ITEM!!  APOLLO PRECURSOR!!
    This is USGS Map I-462,
Geologic Map and Sections of the Timocharis Region of the Moon
. This scarce publication predates the Apollo manned missions, but was prepared with the Apollo program in mind. This was published in 1965. This is only the fifth serious attempt at creating a geologic map of the moon. It depicts a large area NE of the Kepler region of the moon,
    occupying
    latitudes between 16 and 32
    degrees
north. This region contains large mare areas as well as locally significant cratering and mountains. Some chain craters are noted on the map.
Note that the first two photos are my pictures of the item you will receive
, whereas the rest are from a high quality scan of the map to show the details better than my photography would allow.
The map sheet also includes one vertical geologic cross-section. All in all it is a desirable publication for many reasons, not least of which is its rarity.
All in all it is a desirable publication, which, as a precursor to the manned missions of the Apollo program, has a unique place in history.
See my other listings for another related lunar geologic maps. By looking through several of them and comparing them by year of publication, you can follow the evolution of their understanding as they constructed maps first from telescopic observations, then from orbiters, and finally from the manned missions. The various maps I am offering span 12 years of study and advancement. See my store and the Apollo/Space category. These early maps have a significant place in the Apollo program and the history of lunar exploration.
