    Description

HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT MAP!!  ONLY ONE I'VE HAD IN YEARS!!
    This is USGS Map I-586,
Geologic Map of the Alphonsus GA Region of the Moon.
This scarce publication predates the Apollo manned missions, but was prepared with the Apollo program in mind. This was published in 1968. It depicts a small area in the southern hemisphere that is a sub-region of the Ptolemaeus region of the moon.
This map is located almost entirely within Alphonsus crater, which was the Ranger IX impact site in 1965, and the impact site is noted on the map!
I've included it in my photos, above. Ranger IX collected 5800 images during the course of its mission, contributing to the knowledge base prior to the manned missions.
This is a highly detailed map, with a scale much larger than the other regional maps I am offering. As such, many details like smaller rilles and crater-ejecta relationships are depicted that are not found on the larger area maps.
This map benefited greatly from the photos returned by Ranger IX. One of the things discovered by the ranger missions was that the lunar surface was influenced by craters at nearly every scale, craters within craters within craters. In fact, everything within this map is within Alphonsus crater. As such this would make a great companion to the Ptolemaeus map I am also offering which shows that crater in context of the region.
Note that the first two photos are my pictures of the item you will receive, whereas the rest are from a high quality scan of the map to show the details better than my photography would allow.
The map sheet also includes a vertical geologic cross-section. All in all it is a desirable publication for many reasons, not least of which is its scarcity. As a precursor to the manned missions of the Apollo program, it has a unique place in history.
See my other listings for another related lunar geologic maps. By looking through several of them and comparing them by year of publication, you can follow the evolution of their understanding as they constructed maps first from telescopic observations, then from orbiters, and finally from the manned missions. The various maps I am offering span 12 years of study and advancement. See my store and the Apollo/Space category. These early maps have a significant place in the Apollo program and the history of lunar exploration.
Note that I am currently offering the Alphonsus regional map also, which shows a larger expanse of the Alphonsus crater area. It shows the Ranger landing site as well! Collecting both would make a wonderful pair.
