In 1964, Trans World Airlines (TWA) was awarded a contract to provide Base Support at the 88,000 acre John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Originally known as the Merritt Island Launch Area (MILA), the complex was built adjacent to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to carry out the Presidents goal of Landing a Man on the Moon by the end of that Decade.
Initially, TWA’s responsibilities included general maintenance, utilities, supply operations, fire protection and prevention, security and medical services. Over the life of the contract more than 2,000 TWA employees were assigned to the Kennedy Space Center.
New York Times, February 11th, 1964
Trans World Airlines (TWA) announced yesterday it had been selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to provide base support services at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Merritt, Fla. from which Project Apollo astronauts are to be launched. The airline said it would negotiate a contract with NASA to provide general maintenance, utilities, supply operations, fire protection and prevention, security and medical services. The value of the contract for the first year was estimated at more than Million dollars.
Beginning with the Manned Flight Awareness Program
NASA and its Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) created the Manned Flight Awareness (MFA) program that was begun in 1963. Later around the late 1990’s/early 2000’s was renamed to the Space Flight Awareness (SFA) program.
NASA developed the Manned Flight Awareness program to boost Morale and to Maintain Focus on Quality. Also, Invited Representation was practiced both internally and with outside contractors, having major responsibilities for Human Spaceflight and Mission Success.
Awards, Medallions, Pin’s, and Posters were created to enhance employee motivation for job quality and flight safety.

Snoopy is the Official “Spokesdog” of both Manned Flight Awareness (MFA) and the later Space Flight Awareness (SFA) program.
