***The contact light was part of the Apollo Lunar Module lunar surface sensing probes that were approximately 5 feet long that were attached to the bottom of three of the LM landing gear foot pads. When any of the three probes made contact with the lunar surface, pressure on the probe head created an electrical circuit which illuminated the two Lunar Contact lights (one in front of each astronaut). It was the astronaut’s indication of surface contact and to shut the LM descent engine and allow the LM to drop the last few feet to the lunar surface to prevent the possibility of thermal damage and back pressure from the descent engine exhaust from damaging the Descent Stage.
