Apollo 17, Lunar Rover Fender Repairs (1972), Original UPI Wire Service Photo(AP17-001-14)
Original wire service photograph distributed to newsrooms by United Press International on December 12, 1972. Photo is from a live CBS News feed and includes the caption provided by UPI for editors to use when publishing the photograph in their newspaper.
Photo shows astronauts Jack Schmitt (foreground) and Gene Cernan repairing the Lunar Rover fender which dropped off during the first lunar EVA. Where is AAA when you need them?
Apollo 17 was the final lunar mission in the program. It was launched on December 7, 1972 and returned on December 19th. In addition to Cernan and Schmitt the crew included Commend Module pilot Ronald Evans.
The photograph was transmitted by UPI to a printer located in the newsroom. It consisted of a roll of thermal paper on which the photos were printed. As each photo printed the newsroom staff could tear it off and prepare it for use in the paper.
Photo measures 7 x 9 inches

About
Space Flight Collectibles
The memorabilia we offer in our store was collected while I was a teenager and wrapped up in the enthusiasm of those early years of the space program. Much of what we offer was collected as part of the research I was doing for projects in local science fairs. The memorabilia in our store are all original and include NASA and contractor brochures, photos, technical reports, press kits and commemorative collectibles.
We will be adding new memorabilia on a regular basis. Subscribe to our newsletter to receive updates on new arrivals.
Whether you have an interest in the space program from a historical or technical perspective, or just looking to give someone a unique gift, we're sure you will find the memorabilia in our store of interest.
Our store is dedicated to the memory of my parents John and Lorette who never stopped supporting
me in my interest in the space program.
In July 1969, my Father and I were fortunate to
receive a tour of the Kennedy Space Center
3 weeks before the launch of Apollo 11.
In this photo I am joined by our NASA host to
view the Saturn V/Apollo on Launch Pad 39A
surrounded by the Mobile Service Structure.
In July 1970, I had the opportunity to meet with
Wernher von Braun in his office at NASA Headquarters
in Washington, DC. Dr. von Braun was kind enough
to take the time to critique the design I had presented
at a local science fair on a space station re-using
Gemini and Apollo hardware.
