Description
1967 Apollo era FANSTEEL Diwa Pocket Slide Rule 601-1 -- von Braun MetallurgistFrom the estate of a long-time NASA and Teledyne Brown Engineering Metallurgist who worked on the Apollo Saturn program.
Fansteel
was the subcontractor to McDonnell Douglas, the manufacturer of the Apollo Saturn V third stage (S-IV), that made the eight ambient Helium tanks that caused the explosion of the stage S-IVB-503 at the Sacramento Test Operations Facility (SACTO) during its acceptance firing on January 20, 1967.
Fansteel used the wrong filler wire to weld the tank halves together. It was found that 5 of the 8 tanks were welded with pure Titanium filler wire instead of TI-6AL-4V (Titanium Alloy) wire. See last 2 photos.
Diwa Pocket Slide Rule 601-1, made in Denmark. Includes brown leather case.
6" long x 1.25" wide.
Fansteel is stamped on both the leather case and the slide rule back.
I have two (2) of these available -- price shown is for One (1). Choose from:
Fansteel on case and Fansteel with Red F on slide rule.
Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation on case with blue line under Fansteel on slide rule.
